About the Concert
Andover Choral Society concludes its 90th season with the world premiere performance of becoming by Andover-based composer Demetrius Spaneas. Commissioned by the Andover Choral Society, this work concludes the season-long exploration of the Creation story and some of mankind’s oldest questions: Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? Drawing on texts from ancient Indian Hinduism, Greek and Roman mythology, Sufi mysticism, and the Book of Genesis, becoming explores the idea of creation as a spiritual evolution of humankind as well as our relationship with our world and all of creation.
The chorus will perform a lush medley of well-known songs from “West Side Story,” the award-winning musical by Leonard Bernstein, world-renowned composer and conductor from Lawrence. Kevin Siegfried, a professor at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, is another Andover resident and composer whose arrangements of familiar Shaker songs will be featured on the program. Audience members will also hear contemporary arrangements of familiar hymns and ballads by Phillips Academy graduate Gwyneth Walker, composer of over 300 commissioned works.
