Misatango is a brilliant pairing of the ancient Latin Mass text with the exhilarating rhythms and melodic features of Argentinian tango. Composed in 1996, this six-movement work features chorus, mezzo-soprano soloist, bandoneón, piano, and string orchestra. Martín Palmeri, age 51, is a prize-winning Argentinian composer and conductor who wrote that his objective in this composition was to maintain the harmonic language, rhythms, melodic designs, and other characteristics of the tango within the orchestra score, thus allowing the chorus freedom to “just sing the mass.” The program also features Domenico Zipoli’s exuberant Beatus Vir as well as works by other Argentinian composers, including Piazzolla, Ginastera, Pablo Sosa. Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass has been praised as Haydn’s greatest single composition. Originally titled Missa in Angustiis (Mass in Troubled Times), Haydn composed this work in 1798 during a terrifying time for Austria because of Napoleon’s threat to the country. The work, by turns anguished, radiant, and jubilant, concludes with an urgent plea for peace. Also on the program is San Francisco-based composer David Conte’s September Sun. Written in memory of those who perished on September 11, 2001, the text by John Stirling Walker forms an acrostic on the line “God dwells in joy in the midst of sorrow.” The performance concludes with Mormon Tabernacle Choir Music Director Mack Wilberg’s gently uplifting arrangement of the African-American spiritual Peace Like a River.
